In nature, lead chromate exists as the mineral crocoite. It has monoclinic brilliant-red to orange prismatic crystals. Crocoite decomposes below 1000 degrees to lead oxide and green chromic oxide.
The brilliant reds, oranges, vermilion, and yellow colors achieved in lead-chromium glazes are due to precipitation of crocoite crystals.
